The world of sports is constantly evolving, and one of the most exciting developments has been the inclusion of adaptive sports and new disciplines in worldwide sports events. From my perspective as an athlete who has been breaking barriers and pushing the limits in wheelchair motocross (WCMX), it's inspiring and super exciting to see these changes happen!
One of the coolest things I’ve realized about this year’s worldwide sports event is its potential to serve as a platform for athletes from all sports and abilities. The inclusion of BMX and skateboarding in recent years proves this. I think it’s nice to see the sport on the world stage, inspiring others to take up the sport, improve their skills, practice a new trick, or simply just participate! For me and my fellow athletes, it's an incredible opportunity to showcase our skills and compete at the highest level. For fans, it's a chance to witness and be part of the evolution of sports and see new records being set.
I think it's a significant step forward, and I’m happy to see inclusivity taking place. It’s important to include wheelchair sports/adaptive sports of all kinds to show what people with disabilities can achieve.
There's another dream that many of us in the adaptive sports community share. I hope to see WCMX and other extreme wheelchair sports make their way into the Paralympics. The addition of more adaptive sports would truly highlight the incredible talent and determination within this community. If that day comes, I would be very excited for the world to see what we all can do!
I’m ending this blog post by saying: Representation matters. When athletes with disabilities are given the opportunity to compete on the world stage, it sends a message that our achievements are valued and celebrated. It also provides role models for young people with disabilities, showing them that they too can aspire to greatness. The visibility of adaptive sports in major competitions helps build inclusive societies and fair spaces for all!
