Continuing to Lead the Way in Making a Positive Impact on the Environment

TP - 01.06.2025

Since its inception in 2008, TP’s Citizen of the Planet (COTP) has been a leading force in environmental sustainability. COTP embodies our commitment to reducing carbon emissions, embracing greener practices, and inspiring change globally. Together with our employees, we continue to foster a culture of environmental responsibility through environmental initiatives that help build a better and greener world for all.

Through impactful actions such as tree planting, preservation activities, and cleanup initiatives, our employees around the world continue to lead the way in building a sustainable future for generations to come. We are excited to share one of our environmental initiatives and activities that took place in Greece, further marking a significant milestone in our commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement.

TP has partnered with Aegean Rebreath to preserve and restore Posidonia meadows (posidonia oceanica), which are crucial for the Mediterranean marine ecosystem.

Through the innovative Do Not Disturb” project, TP raised awareness about the importance of Posidonia meadows and the threats they face from human activities.  This pioneering project stands out as a collaborative effort, uniting civil society, the private sector, the research community, and the local government in Greece. In addition to mapping and studying the Posidonia meadows and installing anchorage systems, the program also features a groundbreaking pilot project focused on Posidonia planting, aimed at restoring and reinforcing this essential marine ecosystem.

These underwater ecosystems, often called the “lungs of the sea,” play a crucial role in maintaining the health of our oceans. The plant Posidonia meadows, found exclusively in the Mediterranean, is a unique species on the planet. It plays a vital role in addressing the climate crisis by capturing carbon and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere in greater amounts than tropical forests. When boats anchor in unsuitable areas, they can damage these vital underwater ecosystems, which serve as habitats for various marine species and play a significant role in maintaining water quality.

Understanding Anchorage Areas and Why They Matter

Anchorage areas will provide safe locations for vessels to anchor without threatening the health of the surrounding marine environment. By designating these areas, we aim to reduce environmental damage while still accommodating the needs of boaters and local communities.

As part of our initiative, we focused on establishing sustainable anchorage areas. These designated zones are crucial for protecting Posidonia meadows from the harmful effects of improper anchoring. This initiative emphasizes responsible boating practices, ensuring that marine life and habitats are preserved for future generations.

A Day of Learning and Collaboration

Last October 11, engaging educational sessions were held on the importance of Posidonia meadows, emphasizing their critical role in sustaining marine biodiversity and enhancing water quality. The sessions took place in Porto Rafti, bringing together key stakeholders, including local authorities, and community members. This initiative benefited the environment and also fostered a sense of responsibility within the community to protect our marine resources and marks a milestone in marine conservation efforts within the country.

By promoting sustainable practices, TP aims to create a lasting impact on the local community and the broader Mediterranean ecosystem, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the beauty and benefits of healthy Posidonia meadows. Together, we can ensure that our oceans thrive, maintaining the delicate balance of marine life in the Mediterranean.
