Empowering Girls Through Education: TP’s Commitment to Change

TP - 01.24.2025

Celebrated yearly on January 24, International Day of Education reminds us of the power education holds in shaping lives and communities. For girls and young women around the world, access to quality education is key to breaking cycles of poverty, challenging gender norms, and unlocking limitless potential. Currently, 50 million more girls enrolled in school since 2015 and 5 million more completing each level of education. While global progress in girls’ education shows promise, significant challenges persist. Data from UNESCO also shows that approximately 122 million girls still remain out of school due to deep-rooted inequalities, poverty, and harmful societal norms.

The Challenges Facing Girls’ Education

Despite progress, systemic barriers continue to hinder many girls from accessing education. According to UNESCO, the key roadblocks include:

  • Poverty: Families in poverty often prioritize boys' education over girls’.
  • Early marriage and gender-based violence: 18% of countries worldwide still allow girls to marry under the age of 18, limiting their ability to attend school.
  • Discriminatory legal frameworks: Only 57% of countries globally guarantee education without discrimination based on sex or gender.
  • Lack of representation: Education materials often perpetuate stereotypes, with few depictions of women and girls in diverse roles.

Such barriers highlight the need for urgent and sustained efforts to guarantee that every girl receives a safe, inclusive, and empowering education.

UNESCO has outlined critical strategies to ensure that all girls complete their education by 2030. These include strengthening access to 12 years of free, quality education for marginalized girls, building gender-responsive legal frameworks, and ensuring gender equality in educational materials.

How TP Women is Driving Meaningful Change

At TP, we strive to create a better and fairer world for all. This is why we integrate education-focused initiatives into our TP Women programs. TP Women continues to positively impact the quality of life within local communities by implementing initiatives that drive education—we are one with the world in advocating for girls’ education while creating meaningful change in local communities.

Here are a few of TP Women’s initiatives:

El Salvador: Supporting Girls’ Aspirations
In El Salvador, TP partnered with Plan International for their "Mujeres Imparables 2024 Campaign," serving as a primary sponsor. This initiative assisted more than 50 girls and adolescents in pursuing their educational dreams.

TP Women participated in activities, discussions, and events aimed at fostering empowerment and inclusivity. The funds provided critical resources to create educational opportunities for young girls, enabling them to follow their aspirations with confidence.

Philippines: Driving Education and Making a Meaningful Impact on the Community

TP's ongoing efforts to support UNICEF in their goal to empower children in the Philippines through education has transformed many lives and paved the way for a brighter future. With our support, UNICEF has invested in empowering local child development workers, caregivers, parents, and teachers to ensure better access to  learning. Our support made a positive impact, allowing children aged 3 to 4 to have access to essential care and quality education.

Peru: Encouraging Lifelong Ambitions

Through our initiative “To Be Unique is to Be Incredible” in Peru, TP challenged gender norms by introducing girls aged 6 to 16 to careers traditionally associated with men.

This initiative reached young girls directly, encouraging them to explore their interests freely. Additionally, TP distributed more than 3,000 booklets across the region to support the aspirations of migrant children. The focus included improving educational access, fostering social skills, and promoting emotional well-being.

Colombia: Inspiring a Future in AI
At the International Girls in ICT Day in Colombia, we launched “AI Power Girl,” a workshop for girls aged 6 to17 to explore the exciting world of artificial intelligence. With hands-on learning and inspirational content, TP provided girls with a glimpse into the tech-driven careers of tomorrow. By encouraging diversity in AI and technology, we play a part in shaping a future where women and girls thrive in innovative industries.
